This is an AudioUnit designed for audio processing, specifically suited for use with supporting host applications. The primary function of this tool is to distribute the embedded unit within the main app for testing with various sound samples.

The full manual is accessible at: JAX CHROMATIC Compander Manual. Additionally, an introductory video can be viewed at: Introductory Video.

The JAX Chromatic Compander is an intricate real-time spectral dynamics processor that internally divides the audio stream into 32 separate, stereo, chromatically tuned frequency bands. It features a bandpass filter bank comprising fast-response analog filter models, which deliver a natural fading sound with minimal latency. The term 'chromatic' denotes that each bandpass is precisely adjusted to encompass 4 halftones within a musical scale, akin to a classic 3rd octave. Unlike traditional 'Bark' filters, the chromatic bandpass filters are evenly distributed across the musical scale throughout the frequency spectrum.

Each of the 32 frequency bands incorporates a bi-directional stereophonic dynamics processor, based on a compander (expander and compressor combination), enabling spectral dynamics adjustments with specified attack and release values.

This tool, the JAX Chromatic Compander, serves as a notable spectral enhancer capable of significantly enhancing sound perception and clarity by eliminating unwanted frequencies. It is predominantly recommended for use as a mastering tool, psychoacoustic loudness maximizer, and creative mixing implement for various wideband audio signals, including complete mixes and sonically rich audio content.

Utilizing vector processing CPU registers across all compatible platforms ensures optimal performance efficiency. With a total of 64 filters, 64 companders, and 64 input and output mixers operating in parallel, thousands of instructions are processed for each individual audio sample in the continuous input stream.

Despite its advanced capabilities, user interaction is straightforward and intuitive. All parameters can be easily adjusted by touch interaction on the screen. A single macro knob controls the compression/expansion intensity, eliminating the need for complex numerical inputs and enhancing user experience when operating the JAX Chromatic Compander.

Current versions of the AudioUnit are universally accessible on:

  • MacOS (Catalyst Intel)
  • MacOS (Silicon M1/M2/M3...)
  • iOS (iPhone)
  • iPadOS (iPad)

Please be aware that MacOS Catalyst versions might be distributed or sold separately due to restrictions from the AppStore on bundling non-silicon apps with iOS versions. The tool is consistently updated to ensure compatibility with all Apple devices by utilizing cutting-edge frameworks and compilers.
